Divido en secciones, la primera narra la historia, invención y comercialización de la litografía; la segunda describe la fabricación de herramientas y materiales; y la tercera, las técnicas de preparación de la piedra y la extracción de impresiones.
Johann Aloys Senefelder fue el inventor alemán creador de la litografía en 1796. En un principio la llamó impresión química, y casi dos décadas más tarde, cuando ya era famoso su taller de impresión en Múnich, publicó el tratado con el nombre litografía: A complete course of lithography. Casi todos los aspectos técnicos del oficio fueron desarrollados por él. Pocas ramas del conocimiento han sido tan completamente establecidas por sus fundadores. Este es el libro donde Senefelder presenta la historia, los materiales y la técnica de la litografía temprana.
